Sweet Dreams are Made of… Mini-Breaks

I want to go with something I feel totally takes over MY dreams right now – and that’s a weekend away with my pals. It turns out I’m most definitely not the only one and most of you are thinking about the same. Alongside your enquiries about your family holidays, so many of you are mentioning that weekend away – without the children, or the other half, or both!

Where to go? There are the obvious city breaks but there are some other locations for a weekend away that I just think tick so many boxes and you may not have thought of.

Weekend breaks come in all shapes and sizes –

From breathtaking views to award-winning restaurants.

From the heart of the nightlife to the middle of nowhere.

From brand new hotels just opening to old ‘grande dames’ you’ve always wanted to visit.

From 1 hour to 4 hour flights.

Check out a few of my own recommendations here.

TIP: Remember, there are some low deposits and flexible booking conditions out there right now – even for 2022 departures.

MYKONOS – Now if this isn’t what you’re craving right now, I want to know why not! Mykonos could be the most perfect island for that total change from everything home. There’s a vibe to this island that can’t be matched, and it’s the perfect place to escape and immerse yourself into Greek Island life.

Direct from Heathrow, Gatwick and City, under 4 hour flight and is still over 20 degrees by October.

Mykonos Blu is a stunner of a hotel in a stunning location, and I challenge you to find better! With some of the island’s fabulous Beach Clubs close by, it’s also only 10 minute drive from the airport so no wasted time travelling.

BORDEAUX – A classy part of France, with vineyards galore, but also a city with true charisma and a worthy day out. Soak up the Gothic charm, wander the historic streets and take your pick of fabulous eateries for the longest of lunches. But this is a weekend to enjoy the countryside on the doorstep too – the province so famous for vineyards that just stretches for miles under the South West France sunshine.

Direct from Gatwick, Heathrow, City, Luton and Stansted, under 2 hour flight and in mid-20s in June & September.

Les Sources de Caudalie will whisk you into its arms and soothe your soul for the weekend. Eat and drink in true Bordeaux style, live in the understated elegance for which the French are so famous, and of course enjoy the pool and spa.

MONTENEGRO – A destination that has come into its own to rival its neighbour, Croatia. The unspoilt, truly photogenic towns alongside the translucent turquoise waters are flanked now by serious marinas with yachts to drool over, boutiques to window shop and restaurants to sample the region’s catch of the day and local wine.

Tivat is direct from Gatwick, under 3 hour flight and enjoy weather in the late 20s in June. Tip: Be aware that there are still fewer direct flights to be flexible on days!

Regent Porto Montenegro invites you to live the dream, whiling away the days alongside superyachts, supping the Montenegrin wine (who know – that stuff is gorgeous!) and discovering somewhere before the rest of the world does.

MALTA – Malta is actually one of my top recommendations for a long weekend. It’s such an easy laidback place to be, you’re on holiday the second you step foot in the country. The Maltese have earned their reputation as one of Europe’s most friendly populations, which is why you’ll feel like you’ve been there weeks after just a few hours. Being so small, you can cover the historic streets of Valletta, the nightlife and beach-bars, and allow yourself some serious R&R by the pool all in one weekend.

Direct from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted & Luton, 3 ¼ hour flight and still in the mid-20s in September.

The Phoenicia is in Valletta, the capital, itself and has long been Malta’s premier hotel. Spend your time in the serene pool overlooking the sea and port, make the most of being walking distance to so much, and hop in a cab for a spell at one of the island’s cool beach bars.

IBIZA – Known by many as the life and soul of the Mediterranean, Ibiza has many sides to its personality. Head straight up the coast to Santa Eulalia for what I consider to be the best spot for a long weekend away here, giving you the vibe of Ibiza without quite the level of hedonism of other areas. You get to mix the late-night fun with some awesome restaurants & bars, but with the opportunity to find the serenity you’re going to need when you escape the real world. You don’t have to be the world’s biggest party animal to just adore everything there is to offer, but it’s still for those who like a bit of action!

Direct from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted & Luton, 2 ½ hour flight and in the beautiful 20s all summer.

ME Ibiza is in a fab location, putting you in the midst of the fun and games but offers some gloriously calm oases too. I love the rooms with a private pool too so you really can live by your own timelines and enjoy that quality time together you’ve been craving.

LISBON – Have I saved the best to last? This is the proper city break of the selection, however of all the European cities you could do as a weekend away with friends, this is the one I’d say wins hands down. You can be in the centre within no time from the airport, lap up the life of a truly bustling capital city, spend the whole weekend discovering new viewpoints from the seven hills the city is built on, eating fish, seafood and custard tarts accompanied by unbelievable wine, and head for an afternoon on the beach. But all while spending a fraction of the amount you’d spend in any other Western European city.

Direct from City, Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton & Stansted, 2 ¾ hour flight and a great option for a mid-Spring warmer-than-home city break option!

The One Palacio da Anunciada couldn’t be more central and with the beautiful rooftop pool and courtyard, it’s your ideal Lisbon home. It’s that balance you always hope for, with the bustle on your doorstep but the peace & calm of your own haven when you want it.
